Mens 2 vs Abbeydale 3 (H) - 03/04/17

Mens 2 faced a top of the table round-robin where the top 3 have 2 games to go and each play each other. We were on 18 points, Firvale on 20 and Abbeydale on 16 so a win tonight and we were up! Lose though, and we would have to win away at top of the league Firvale....

Abbeydale brought a strong side, probably their best for this team, and we also had a full strength side out, so we expected a tough battle of nerves.

The nerves multiplied when all three pairs lost their first games, even Ben and Rob, we can't remember when that last happened.

Then Steve and Rich steadied the nerves by taking apart the top pair to 18 and 9, changing mental strategy with Rich persuading himself we have lost before we have started - that way he plays well!!

Ben and Rob then came to the party too, beating to second pair to 14 and 13. Sam and Dave's record of at least 2 out of 3 was in jeopardy, but a 28-26 win against the third pair kept it going and brought us level at 3-3 with the last round of games to come.

Ben and Rob then got us ahead with a tight 21-19 and 22-20 win against the top pair, some nerve jangling late rallies on the far end of the sports hall ending with a despairing dive from the Abbeydale clone of our Arun, a man who reaches absolutely everything!

So Sam and Dave then Rich and Steve had a race to see who could clinch promotion. Both won the first end then lost the second ensuring a nervy finish. From about 10 all both rubbers saw Ranmoor surge ahead and both were won with Sam and Dave sneaking the glory by 30 seconds.

Six evenly matched pairs ending up with us all winning 2 and Abbeydale all winning 1, with everyone losing to a different pair. The ultimate in tight games.

We're up!

Now for a potential title decider at Firvale where we then need them to lose away to Abbeydale too due to points different. If we lose the title it will be because of the 3 losses where we have struggled to put a team out, all the others, we have won. We'll see......

Well played to all the lads including the rest of the squad and to Abbeydale too who brought a fair but strong side and will be gutted to miss out on promotion (Firvale's promotion also guaranteed tonight due to this result).

Pair of the Match - All Three. Too harsh to split anybody in the circumstances!!
