Mens 2 v Wisewood 4 (A) - 4.1.17

Another year another away match which threatened to upset our promotion hopes due to a lack of available pairs for the third time this season. We had Sam and Dave both away, and several more unavailable, but luckily managed to persuade Rich (or more correctly, Rich’s better half!) to rearrange plans, which meant I persuaded myself to don suitably natty coloured glasses and play with Rich in hostile territory (the lights not the friendly opponents). So in the end we had two of the three regular pairs available, and Snowden and Mick kindly agreed to deputise as pair 3.

Win we must to stay in contention, and while Mick and Snowden enjoyed it and dug in brilliantly to come close against the third pair, they didn’t manage any rubbers. So it was all about the gamble to keep the two regular pairs together and whether it worked.

It did.

Three out of four were achieved against the top two pairs, with Rich and I just failing to get a full house by getting narrowly pipped to 19 in the 3rd end against the top pair. Ben “full house” Hedar and Rob “three each time” Thompson continued their recent run of wins by edging both their rubbers in three ends, then beat the third pair in straight ends too.

So 4-4 with the clock showing 9:59pm and just 16 minutes to go, so we had to be fast to prevent a draw. Rich and I went straight on and (unusually for me) went on the attack with every shot. By 10:14 we had wrapped up a 21-13 21-11 win so Mens 2 won 5-4, our fifth win in seven, winning all five with at least 2 first choice pairs available!
