Mens 2 vs Abbeydale Park 2 (A) - 22/10/14

A Wednesday night match at Abbeydale is a regular match for most clubs across the season and this was Ranmoor's first taste of the season. The side that turned up was a split of 3 from the previous match along with Clive (who had played in Men's 1 in the first round of games) and season debuts for Rahul & Mick.

With Rich J (unable to attend midweek), Ravi (injury) and Dave H (granddad duties) unavailable the captaincy was taken on by Dave W who following discussions decided on splitting the pairs evenly in strength meaning 3 new pairings took to the court for the first time.

The early start meant that 3 courts were available for the initial round of games with all our pairs coming off 2nd best in straight ends. Shiraz & Mick were against the strongest pair and took a game to get accustomed to each other in losing 8 & 13, Rob & Clive played a tough first game but just came up short to 14 & 15 whilst Dave & Rahul were never quite in either end in losing 13 & 12.

The second round of games was reduced to 2 courts but went much the same way as the first although our boys were much more competitive with Dave & Rahul taking the first pair to 15 in the first end (the less said about the 2nd the better as the opponents seemed to wake up), Shiraz & Mick were just edged out to 18 & 17 including a couple of suspicious looking calls from the opposition. In the other game Rob & Clive managed to take the sides first end of the night but unfortunately couldn't secure the much deserved victory.

In the final round Shiraz & Mick replicated their scores of 17 & 18 with a battling comeback from 20-13 down to almost take the second end. Rob & Clive were unfortunate to meet the awake first pair in going down 11 & 9. Dave & Rahul managed to become the second pair to take a rubber to a deciding end but, having won the first to 18, they went down 15 & 15 in the deciding ends as the opposition made fewer errors in the tight points.

So a 9-0 defeat does not fully reflect the efforts of the team and we look forward to welcoming the Abbeydale team to Ecclesfield later in the season for hopefully a more competitive match.
