Comb 1 v Westfield (H) - 3/2/14

The first Monday night following half of the combined 1 team returning from the winter training camp in the Alps saw us face a strong team of title contenders from Westfield.  With two key regulars in Mark and Claire missing through illness and injury respectively, Steve and Jane stepped up. Captain Rich took the decision to change things up radically and switched a few pairings and positions.

Rich moved himself to number 1 for the first time in his time at Ranmoor and this also meant playing his first combined game for the club without his partner Karen, instead playing with Helen as he looked for the best way to take 5 wins. This left Sam at his normal number 2 spot but with an unfamiliar partner in Karen (normally the number 3).  Steve and Jane made up the final pair at number 3.

Rich and Sam went out on court and having only played together handful of times found a stuttering start but eventually got it together after a few points and won in straight ends to 15 and 17.  Karen and Helen played well in their opening game but ultimately succumbed to a tough pair to 18 and 16. Game 3 saw Jane and Helen have a stormer as a new pairing taking a tough first end to 18.  They eventually lost out in 3 ends however as things went on and the Westfield pair got into their flow.  Steve and Rich hoped to get more stuck into their opponents than they did and although they had some good rallies, they were always a step behind on the pace of these regular first division players, losing to 13 and 14.  Doubles over, 3-1  Westfield .

The mixed did little to even the scores as Karen and Sam came up short twice as a one off pairing, losing both in 3 ends. Steve and Jane also lost out in both, this time in 2 ends, but gained some valuable first division experience that should really help them in the Combined 2 team’s battles for the rest of the season.  Rich and Helen took the only win of the mixed, with a comfortable first end win to 12 before having a real tight affair and edging a second end 23-21 on their first match point attempt having seen off two game points from their opposition.

A 7-2 loss in the end for Ranmoor against one of the leagues better teams.  Well done and thanks to all for playing.
