Comb 1 v Paces (H) - 7/10/13

With the taste of opening night defeat away from home still fresh in their mouths, combined 1 went straight into their opening home fixture against Paces. A strong set of ladies as usual for the visiting team backed up by a very strong group of men. The opening round of games pitted Sam and Mark and Claire and Helen in level doubles action. Sam and Mark came through comfortably 21-11, 21-15 and are looking like a winning partnership for the year, also teaming up in mens 1. Claire and Helen came up short 21-14, 21-18 in their opening game, giving us an even start. Karen and Helen went out next and having lost the first end to 12 came back to win the second to 18. They came up short in the final end to 12 giving Paces a 2-1 lead.

Rich and Mark meanwhile were on the other court losing their first end of the season together to 18. They did however go on to rally winning the second end to a comfortable 13 and the deciding end to 15 having settled down into their new but hopefully blossoming partnership. 2-2 after the level doubles!

Onto the mixed for the evening with Claire and Sam losing their first end to a tight 23-21 scoreline and going down in two to 11 in the second. Rich and Karen went onto court against the strongest mixed pair of the evening and managed to best them to 17 and 11 again evening things up at 3-3.

Helen and Mark won their final game of the night comfortably to 12 and 12 to give us a 4-3 advantage with 2 to play. Rich and Karen then played the remaining mixed pair knowing a victory would secure the match. They came through with a strong 21-11 21-12 to secure the first season win for Ranmoor. Sam and Claire took their last game to 3 ends against the strongest pair but came up short in the third to 16, despite a great effort and pushing them all the way. An especially great effort to win the second end 25-23!

All in all another good performance and a home win for Ranmoor kickstarting the season. Sam left court with one knee double the size of the other and takes a well earned break after 2 games in 2 days. Thanks to all for a great win!
