Mens 1 v's Grenhilheg (H) - 26/11/12

A slightly mis-scheduled match on Monday night, coming straight after half the mens 1 side had been away on Dave W's stag do in Newcastle, saw the visit of Grenhilheg to Ecclesfield.  With the ladies taking on Broomgrove on the other side of the hall it was a busy night once again for the club.

As the pair who had no alcohol excuses it was expected that Rich W & Dave H would keep the side going, leaving the worse for wear to only win a couple of games, and they started well against the father & son 1st pair winning the first end to 18.  The opposition then battled back, however, and managed to take it to a 3rd end & winning that 22-20 giving Rich & Dave only their 2nd defeat of the season.  On the other court a post stag Sam, no longer sporting his pink weekend wig, & a jet-lagged Ravi (just returning from the US of A) were struggling to get going against the 2nd pair in going down 17 & 11.

As with the Jaguar 2 match then it was down to Dave W & Andy, both feeling the after effects of a weekend of drinking & paintballing, to salvage a point from the first round of games.  They started well enough but in patent style lost the first end to 15 before battling back to just sneak the other ends 17 & 19.  Straight back on they were, no rest for the weary legs, & another tight game against the 2nd pair saw a 23-21 win followed by a 17 defeat & another 3rd end win, this time to 16.

Ravi & Sam appeared to have shaken off their rustiness of the first game & were pushing the 1st pair all the way with a tight 3 end defeat being the final outcome, despite no game being worse than 18.  Rich & Dave H took their frustration at the first game defeat out on the 3rd pair in winning 10 & 15 leaving the scores tied at 3-3 going into the last games (again the same position as against Jaguar 2).

The team seems to rise to these challenges when the games have to be won.  As Rich & Dave H took on the 2nd pair winning 6 & 12 on one court they were followed by Sam & Ravi beating the 3rd pair 17 & 5.  While this was going on Dave W & Andy were showing the others how it was done by beating the 1st pair 17 & 16, securing their first 3-0 of the season in the process, not bad for a post-stag energy sapping match.  The final result, another 6-3 win, continues the guys unbeaten start to the season with only Jaguar 1 still to play.  No rest now though as the next match is 2 days later at Abbeydale, can we get to christmas with 6 wins out of 6?
