Mens 1 v's Abbeydale 2 (A) - 28/11/12

Abbeydale 2 away was the second match in 3 days for the Mens 1 boys and was the first return fixture of the season having already won 7-2 at home.  The opposition had 5 of the same players but appeared a much more organised unit and the newcomer only served to strengthen the team.

Rich & Dave H started the night off with a straight forward victory against the 1st pair, winning 11 & 12, while Sam & Ravi took on what turned out to be the strongest pair (again featuring former Hunloker Simon) and lost out 12 & 14.  With the switch around Dave W & Andy looked to continue their good form from Monday but weren't allowed to get going by the 3rd pair in going down 14 & 7 (their worst performance in quite some time) while Rich & Dave took on the 2nd pair in a tight thriller going down one end with a 28-26 scoreline before battling back to win 16 & 18, this despite Dave feeling the pace with a tweak of the knee.

Sam & Ravi bounced back against the 3rd pair in winning 18 & 16 while Dave & Andy took the first pair to 3 ends despite being a game & 13-5 down at one point, unfortunately though the opposition fought back and took the decider to 12.  Rich & Dave, now struggling a bit and having to play conservatively, took the 3rd pair on and dragged themselves to a 16 & 19 victory to wrap up all 3 games once again leaving the score 4-3 to Ranmoor with the last two games to go on.  Dave & Andy seemed to have run out of steam and lost against the strongest pair 14 & 10 meaning they had a reversal of Monday in losing all 3 games.

This left Sam & Ravi, having lost the 1st end 21-14, knowing that the result lay in their hands.  They pushed hard and seemed to be overcoming a stubborn pairing but ne ver quite got away, in the end levelling up with a 24-22 win.  With the support of the rest of the team at every point they set out to win the last end, it was only 11-10 up at the change of ends but they managed a run of points to get to 15-11.  A bit of an exchange of points left the score at 19-16 before the opposition rallied & dragged it back to 19-19.  Finally with the clock having ticked past 10pm Sam served and a short rally saw the final error from the opposition & victory was secured.

A match played in the very best of spirits with plenty of banter & good honest play (several no shot calls were made by the opposition even on key points) saw an eventual 5-4 victory.  Men of the match are Sam & Ravi for the pressure win at the end, with a special mention to Rich who played extremely well to help Dave through after his injury.  We head into the christmas break with an unbeaten record from 6 games and a chance of second successive promotion
